Initiatives Toward Carbon Neutrality

Under Toshiba Group’s Environmental Future Vision 2050, our company recognizes climate change response as one of its key management priorities and is actively promoting initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality.
In fiscal year 2024, we introduced an on-site Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) system at our Oita Site, becoming the first semiconductor manufacturing site within the Toshiba Group in Japan to do so. In addition, operations began at our Iwate Site in May 2025. By utilizing electricity generated from solar power facilities installed on our premises, we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with our business activities.
We are also actively expanding the use of off-site PPAs by leveraging environmental value derived from geothermal and solar power generation. Through the combined use of on-site and off-site PPAs, we expect approximately 10% of our annual electricity consumption to be supplied through PPA schemes.
Furthermore, by combining these initiatives with renewable energy certificates introduced in fiscal year 2023, we have achieved the equivalent of 100% renewable electricity usage across our operations. Going forward, we will continue to promote decarbonization and reduce the environmental impact of our business activities through the expanded use of diverse renewable energy sources, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.

Initiatives to Cultivate Flowers Together with Communities

As part of our efforts to foster harmonious relationships with local communities, we are actively engaged in planting flower seedlings. Specifically, we are participating in the “Flowers Everywhere Campaign” in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture, and the “Flowerpot Fostering Program” in Oita City, Oita Prefecture. These activities, carried out in collaboration with local residents, serve as important opportunities to beautify townscapes and create greenery-filled environments, while also deepening our ties with these communities. In our planting activities, employees take the lead and handle the entire process, from planting flower seedlings to maintenance tasks such as watering and weeding. The colorful flowers not only bring beauty and tranquility to the community, but also help raise our employees’ environmental awareness. We will carry on with our community outreach activities through flowers.

Social Contribution Activities

Activities to Promote a Circular Economy

Every year, we designate October as “Circular Economy Promotion Month” and strive to advance our resource recycling initiatives.
◇Resource Recycling Activities
Our employees participate in various resource recovery activities. We use the proceeds from the sale of the collected resources as donations to support social contribution activities. Through this effective use of local resources, we aim to build a circular economy and contribute to local communities.
◇Upcycling Activities
We are also engaged in an initiative to reuse acrylic panels that are no longer needed in our business activities. While working to reduce waste and make effective use of resources, we are also contributing to sustainable manufacturing by adding new value to materials.
◇Food Drive Activities
We are conducting a campaign to collect spare food products from households. The collected food is donated to food banks through organizations such as the Council of Social Welfare, and distributed to people in the community who need assistance.

Semiconductor Outreach Classes

We teach on-site semiconductor-related classes at nearby elementary, junior high, and high schools, as a way to foster friendly coexistence with our local communities while nurturing the next generation of talent.

Through this program, we provide accessible explanations of the roles and inner workings of semiconductors through experiments and hands-on activities, with the aim of sparking children’s interest in science and technology. This initiative contributes to the development of future manufacturing professionals as we continue our educational support activities for our local communities.

Sale Event Hosted by a Welfare Facility for People with Disabilities (Iwate)

We hold a sale event on the second and third Fridays of every month that is organized with a local welfare facility for people with disabilities.
This initiative has been ongoing since 2011, and the diverse items on sale are all handmade at the facility. They including bread, sweets, dango confectionery balls, and ganzuki (a local specialty cake made in southern Iwate).
Many of our employees look forward to the sale every time, and the events help to bring us closer to the local community.

Donating Unused Calendars to a Local Daycare Center (Iwate)

We put out a call within the company to collect unused calendars, and donate them to a nearby daycare center.
We’ve been doing this since 2009, and the donated calendars are used by the children for drawing, to the delight of everyone at the daycare center.

Biodiversity Conservation Activities

Biodiversity Preservation Initiatives: Conservation Activities for Rare Plant Beds (Iwate)

Since 2012, our Iwate Operations facility has maintained flower beds, primarily featuring rare plants, on its premises. The flower beds help to conserve biodiversity, and are part of the facility’s conservation activities.

This initiative aims to contribute to ecosystem conservation by cultivating and maintaining native plants, while respecting the local natural environment. The flower beds create an environment that attracts diverse wildlife, including butterflies such as Japan’s national butterfly (Sasakia charonda, the Great purple emperor.) In the flower beds, we observe the plants’ growth and the wildlife that visits, as we carry on routine maintenance tasks such as weeding and watering. As a result, we are creating an environment that promotes awareness of coexistence with nature, even within an industrial zone.

Firefly Activities at Kitahana River (Oita)

Since 2010, our Oita Operations facility has been working on firefly conservation activities on the Kitahana River, into which the plant discharges its treated wastewater, as part of its biodiversity conservation efforts.
In the early days of the initiative, under the banner of “Bringing Fireflies Back to the River,” we conducted surveys of firefly populations on the Kitahana River and worked with local residents to release freshwater black snails, which serve as food for firefly larvae, into the river. As a result, we were able to observe fireflies in flight in 2015. We are currently continuing our cleanup efforts along the Kitahana River, to maintain an environment hospitable to fireflies. In addition, every year from May through June, we hold firefly-watching events for our employees and their families. These events serve as an opportunity to assess the results of our efforts, and to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the natural environment. Through these long-term efforts, we are promoting the conservation of the local natural environment and friendly coexistence with the local community.
